Thursday is English conversation day! Today, we had fun solving riddles in English!
11月から毎週木曜日に日進ベタニヤ教会で行われている英会話教室に通っています。
クラスメイトが週末に旅行に行くバスの中で「なぞなぞ」大会をやって楽しかったというお話があり、
One of my classmates shared a story about having a fun riddle contest on the bus during a weekend trip.
英語のなぞなぞ（riddle）大会が始まりました！
And that’s how our English riddle contest began!
“What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, three legs in the evening, and no legs at night?”
「朝は四本足で歩き、昼は二本足で歩き、夕方は三本足で歩き、夜には足がなくなるものは何か？」
これは、日本語にもある有名ななぞなぞですね。
This is a well-known riddle in Japanese too!
答えは「人間」です。
The answer is “a human.”
The one who buys it, never uses it.
The one who uses it, never knows they are using it. What is it?”
作る人はそれを売り、買う人は自分で使わない。使う人は自分が使っていることに気づかないものは何でしょう？
答えは「棺桶」です。
The answer is “a coffin.”
What can you catch but never throw?
取ることはできるけど、投げることができないものはなんだ？
答えは風邪です。
The answer is a cold!
”catch a cold” で「風邪をひく」という熟語を知らないと答えられないなぞなぞですね。
This riddle relies on knowing the idiom “catch a cold,” which means “to get sick with a cold.” Without that knowledge, it’s tricky to solve!
Why was ６ afraid of 7?
６はなぜ７を恐れていたの？
これも、古典的な英語のなぞなぞですね。
Yes, this is another classic riddle in English!
答えは、７が９を食べたから。
Because 7 8 (ate) 9.”
これは英語的なダジャレですね。「8（エイト）」と「ate（食べた）」が同じ発音なので、7が9を「食べた」と言って、6が怖がったというジョークです。
It’s an English pun because “eight” and “ate” are pronounced the same. The joke plays on the idea that 7 “ate” 9, making 6 scared.
日本語のなぞなぞも、頭が柔らかくないと答えられませんが、英語のなぞなぞも同じですね。
That’s right! Just like Japanese riddles, English riddles also require some flexible thinking to figure out the answers.
加えて、英語の表現を知っていないと答えられないものや、同一発音を利用したダブルミーニングに気づく必要があるので、良い頭の体操になりました！
You need to know English expressions and recognize double meanings based on identical pronunciations, making it a great mental workout!
