I’m Nishio, the head of the Selmo Nisshin Nishi Elementary School Classroom, located in Nisshin City. Our focus is on providing a learning space primarily for students from Nisshin Nishi Junior High School, where they can take initiative in their studies, learn at their own pace, and utilize ICT for independent learning.

Thursday is English conversation day
~ I Brought a Former Student Who Just Returned from Studying Abroad as a Special Guest ~

一昨年11月から毎週木曜日に日進ベタニヤ教会で行われている英会話教室に通っています。
I’ve been attending an English conversation class held every Thursday at Nisshin Bethany Church since November the year before last.

 

今日の英会話に、スペシャルゲストとして、先月留学先のアメリカから帰ってきたばかりの卒塾生を連れていきました。
For today’s English conversation session, I brought along a special guest — ｍy former student who just returned last month from studying abroad in the United States.

 

なかなか私との間だと恥ずかしがって英語を話してくれないのですが、今日はたっぷりと彼女の英語を聞くことができました。
She’s usually a bit shy about speaking English with me, but today we had the chance to hear her speak a lot of it — and she did great.

 

サナ先生がクリアなブリティッシュ系の発音なので、比較して彼女がアメリカンな発音になっていたのがよくわかりました。
Since Ms. Sanna has a clear British-style accent, it was easy to notice the contrast — ｍy former student’s English had a distinctly American sound.

 

留学から戻ってきて、秋からは卒業に向けて卒論に着手しなければいけません。
Now that she’s back from studying abroad, she’ll need to start working on her graduation thesis this fall as she heads toward completing her degree.

卒論のテーマはまだ決まっていないけど、書きたいアイデアはあるそうです。
She hasn’t decided on a specific thesis topic yet, but she says she does have some ideas she’d like to explore.

 

それは、北海道でフィールドワークをもとに、日本の過疎地域がどうやって持続可能な社会に戻せるかというものです。
One of her ideas is based on fieldwork she did in Hokkaido — she wants to explore how Japan’s depopulated rural areas can be revitalized into more sustainable communities.

 

日進は人口が増え続けている田舎町なのでピンとこないそうですが、お隣東郷町に住むクラスメイトがヒントをくれましたね。
Since Nisshin is a rural town that’s actually seeing population growth, she said it’s a bit hard to relate — but a classmate from neighboring Togo Town gave her a helpful hint.

 

交通網、特に高齢者が出かけようとしたときに、気軽に使える「足」がないことがとっても問題だと。
They pointed out that one major issue is the lack of accessible transportation — especially for elderly residents who have no easy way to get around when they want to go out.

そういえば、日進市では無人運転のコミュニティバスの実験運行が行われており、これの次のステップではオンデマンドでの運用も可能になるのではないでしょうか。
Speaking of which, Nisshin City has been running trial operations of a self-driving community bus. It seems likely that the next step could be implementing an on-demand service model.

スマホでコミュニティバスを予約し、数人の予約が入ったらぐるっと巡回して目的地に連れて行ってくれる。そんなサービスがあれば高齢者も安心して住めそうです。
If there were a service where people could reserve a community bus via smartphone, and once a few bookings are in, the bus would make a loop to pick them up and take them to their destinations — that would really help elderly residents feel more secure and comfortable living in the area.

卒塾生は、卒論のヒントをもらいながら、とっても楽しい英会話の時間が過ごせたようで、ぜひまた参加したい！と言ってくれましたね！
My former student seemed to really enjoy the English conversation session while also picking up some great inspiration for her thesis. She even said she’d love to join us again sometime!
