I’m Nishio, the head of the Selmo Nisshin Nishi Elementary School Classroom, located in Nisshin City. Our focus is on providing a learning space primarily for students from Nisshin Nishi Junior High School, where they can take initiative in their studies, learn at their own pace, and utilize ICT for independent learning.

木曜は英会話の日！　～12星座と十二支～
Thursday is English conversation day! ～The 12 Zodiac Signs and the Chinese Zodiac ～.

昨年11月から毎週木曜日に日進ベタニヤ教会で行われている英会話教室に通っています。
I’ve been attending an English conversation class held every Thursday at Nisshin Bethany Church since last November.

年が明けて新年最初の英会話のクラスです。
It’s the first English conversation class of the New Year.

 

年末年始の休みをどのように過ごしたのか、お土産のお菓子をいただきながら楽しくお話しました。
We had a fun chat about how we spent the New Year holidays while enjoying some souvenir sweets.

 

途中、干支の話になりました。今年の干支は巳年（へび）ですね。
During the conversation, we started talking about the Chinese Zodiac. This year’s zodiac animal is the snake.

 

私も巳年生まれなので、狡猾さがあると言われていました。
I was also born in the Year of the Snake, so people often say I have a cunning nature.

一方で西洋は12星座による星占いがポピュラーですね。
On the other hand, in Western culture, astrology based on the 12 zodiac signs is quite popular.

 

自分は10月生まれのてんびん座。なのでバランス感覚が良いとよく言われます。
I was born in October, so I’m a Libra. People often say I have a good sense of balance..

 

生まれた年で決まる干支と生まれた月で決まる星座、正直どちらも該当する人が多すぎて信じられないですけどね。
The zodiac animals based on birth year and the zodiac signs based on birth month… Honestly, there are just too many people who fit into each category, so it’s hard to take them seriously.

 

そういえば、干支（十二支）を英語にした際、日本語と違う動物がいます。日本だと亥（イノシシ）ですが、中国だとブタになるので、英語ではPigとなるそうです。Speaking of the zodiac, one animals differ when translated into English. In Japan, it’s the “wild boar” (亥), but in China, it’s the “pig,” so it’s translated as “Pig” in English.

 

今年、年男ということは誕生日が来ると60才で還暦です！　いい年にしたいですね。
This year, being the “Year of the Snake” for me means that I’ll be turning 60 and celebrating my KANREKI (60th birthday)! I hope it will be a wonderful year.
